Preventing an Asthma Flare-up This Summer

Between the pollen and humidity of Holly Springs, summer in the area is notorious for causing asthma flare-ups. At Starlight Pediatrics, serving Holly Springs, NC, and the nearby region, our Dr. Maria Castro provides care for children with asthma but would like to take a moment to educate you on ways you can help manage this condition this summer.

Watch the Pollen Count

Whether you watch the news or look at the pollen count via an app on your phone, monitor this number carefully. If you notice the pollen count is higher than normal, keep your child in for the day.

Watch the Humidity

We understand that children want to get out as much as possible. And while we want to see children out playing, your child might need to refrain on days when the humidity is high. You may find this information on the news or through a weather app.

Have a Rescue Inhaler on Hand

If your child has a prescription for a rescue inhaler, make sure you have one available during the summer. Encourage your child to use it at the first signs an asthma attack is coming on to prevent the onset.

Choose AC Over Fans

Air conditioners tend to blow less dust throughout the room, especially when you keep them cleaned out and regularly change the filters.

Plus, the AC controls the amount of humidity in the room.

Don't Stop Exercising

Children who have asthma need exercise just as much as children without it. Your child shouldn't be sitting on the sidelines all summer while his or her friends play.

If your child is getting winded from normal exercise, contact our Holly Springs, NC, practitioner to change his or her current asthma management plan.

Recommend your child to participate in physical activities earlier in the morning to avoid the heat of the afternoon.

Enjoying Fireworks

The smoke and sulfur from gun powder from fireworks can irritate your little one's sensitive airways and trigger an attack. Have your child stand upwind of the smoke. Enjoy them from a location far away from the fireworks, or consider watching the fireworks inside.

Enjoying Campfires

Choose a fire with LED logs that don't emit smoke, which is better suited for a child with asthma.

If you can't alter the campfire plans, have your child stand upwind from the smoke.

The humidity and pollen count in the summer in Holly Springs, NC, can make the outdoors unpleasant at times. However, when you carefully plan and alter certain activities, your child can enjoy the summer safely with asthma.
