Medical Ear Piercing for Children

Did you know that more than 80 percent of Americans have a piercing? The most common piercings are found on the ear, with the earlobe especially common. Some folks get their ears pierced at mall kiosks or tattoo parlors, but the best place to have the procedure performed is a doctor’s office. If you’d like to schedule a medical ear piercing in Holly Springs, NC, contact Dr. Maria Castro or Dr. Yenny Cruz at StarLight Pediatrics.

The Medical Ear Piercing Difference

So what makes medical ear piercings different? When you get your child’s ears pierced at the doctor’s office, you can ensure that the procedure is being done in a clean, sterile environment. While the staff at a mall kiosk or tattoo parlor may work hard to keep things clean, these environments are often contaminated with high levels of bacteria and the like.

An unsanitary environment may increase the risk of ear infections and other complications. If your child gets an ear infection, it could damage their hearing, cause a lot of pain, and otherwise be disruptive. It’s best to reduce risks by having the piercing done at a doctor’s office.

Further, we use the highest quality piercing equipment available. We have plenty of practice, so you can rest assured that the procedure will be performed correctly. Of course, we also take care and pride in cleaning and sterilizing our equipment. Want to undergo a medical ear piercing in Holly Springs, NC? Come see Dr. Castro or Dr. Cruz at StarLight Pediatrics

What to Expect When Getting Your Ears Pierced

Getting your ear pierced is a relatively quick process. First, we will mark the spot on the ear where the piercing will be performed. You and your child can double-check the spot to make sure it’s where you want it to be. Then we will use wipes and solutions to sterilize the part of the ear where the piercing is being performed.

Next, a needle gun will be used to make the actual piercing. This can cause a bit of pain and discomfort, but it rarely lasts for more than a few moments. In some cases, there might be a little bit of bleeding. After that, you’ll want to leave the earrings in for six weeks or more. Also, make sure you regularly clean the ear.

The risks of complications are typically minimal with ear piercings. That said, it is possible for the piercing to become infected or for other issues to crop up. The good thing about working with a doctor’s office to pierce an ear is that we can tell you what to watch out for.
