Common Urological Conditions in Children

Urologic disorders are common among people of all ages, and there is a wide range of them to look out for. Some of the most common ones for children are listed below.

Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infections are common among adults, but they are also common among children. A urinary tract infection or UTI is an infection that occurs in the kidneys, bladder, urethra, and ureters. They typically come with the following symptoms:

  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Pain in the back or lower stomach
  • Fever or chills
  • A persistent need to urinate
  • Urinating very little
  • Having cloudy or smelly urine
  • Being tired, weak, or shaky

Bedwetting

Bedwetting or nocturnal enuresis is common in young children, so it’s not always a sign for concern. However, if a child is beyond preschool age and still having accidents at night, it likely requires medical attention. The cause might be as simple as the fear of the dark or some form of stress. However, it could be something more serious, so a visit to Dr. Castro is in order.

Hernias

The abdomen is made up of several layers of muscle and connective tissue. Their purpose is to protect the organs that lie beyond them. Sometimes, a gap occurs in the muscles and tissues, causing some parts of the abdomen to push out.

These can cause pain and suffering and should be addressed as soon as possible. Dr. Castro at StarLight Pediatrics can help diagnose a hernia and recommend the best course of treatment.

Kidney Stones

The kidneys are responsible for removing waste from your child’s body through urine. Often, if there is an excess of waste or your child is not taking in enough fluids to flush the waste, it can develop into a kidney stone.

Kidney stones do not always cause symptoms, but large ones can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. They can also block the flow of urine, cause blood in the urine, and may cause infections.
